We came here because of the complimentary birthday brownie :P which I thought was really nice the last time we had it for L’s birthday. Didn’t even know about it until Sl told us we could get a free brownie at Morganfield’s if it’s your birthday month!
I ordered the fish and chips lunch set [$14.90] – really like their fish and chips and tartar sauce – it’s moist, battered well, much better than any of the fish and chips I’ve tried in the US (including the one at Ivar’s!! Who is apparently supposed to be the authority on how to cook the North West catch)
The set comes with the soup of the day or a garden salad – which has a surprisingly nice balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
L had the popcorn pork [$8.90], which doesn’t sound like it would work but it was pretty good. They served it with chipotle sauce and some kind of lemony aioli. I didn’t like the fats in it though, would have preferred if they used lean pork cubes. The breading was excellent. The other place that does really good pork snack bites (crackling) is Cajun Kings.
And for dessert, we had the brownie. A huge scoop of vanilla bean ice cream drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce. The brownie is topped with walnuts and is thoroughly moist inside (although it’s the sort they microwave). Still, it was free, so I’m not complaining! Tastes great too.
The server asked what my name was and I told her and then realized she was about to sing the birthday song to me, which was a little embarrassing. It was sweet of her to do it though, at least it wasn’t the whole crew trooping out. It’s ok when it’s done in a small restaurant like PepeNero, but Morganfield’s at Star Vista is HUGE! And everyone will be staring at you.
I’m glad we’ve learnt how to order a just-right amount for the two of us at this American restaurant with their American sized portions!
