We ate here after hiking for about 3-4 hours at Wallace Falls State Park, which is only about a 5 minute drive away. It was still part of the lunch hour, which ends at 3pm, but we didn’t really order from the lunch menu cause there were so many other things to try.
Restaurant interior. Practically deserted, with several slot machines and slightly weird people (Gold Bar is a small town). The proprietor of this place was pretty friendly though and joked a lot with us.
We ordered the fajita trio, which is steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas served with warm tortillas, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, refried beans, rice, and shredded cheese.
I would have preferred more shrimp. The steak and chicken slices also weren’t really tender. There also wasn’t really a large sizzle (think the hot plate wasn’t sufficiently warmed) and also not too much wok hei. There are some places where you can order their fajitas and instantly become the envy of every customer in the establishment. This is not one of those.
The appetizer platter had some kind of fried spring rolls with pork
There were also cheese quesadillas, pulled pork, refried beans with queso and nachos, etc. etc. I don’t remember what it’s called, rodeo deluxe or something. I liked everything, but thought the cheese quesadillas were maybe a little too salty.
Finally we had this cheesy seafood casserole stuffed into a pineapple – pretty innovative I thought. I’ve never seen it in a mexican restaurant before, nor do most people pair pineapple with seafood. It worked, but the sauce was a little too cheesy/creamy so the seafood isn’t the star of this dish. There wasn’t really a star of this dish – it was good but in a homogenous sorta way.
It’s a decent place to get a bite if you’re in Gold Bar. After all, your options are limited. The owner is cute though.
Him: “How was everything?”
Us: “Very good!”
Him: “I’ll see you tomorrow, yes?”
Us: “hahaha of course.”
It’s funny if you know exactly how small a town Gold Bar is and how few people go here. He probably knows everyone who lives there by name. There are some restaurants in the nearby Monroe too but it was pretty late by the time we hiked our way back from the middle falls and this place had a really extensive menu.
